Stubai Glacier

A superb glacial ski area, with about 120km of marked runs, plus some itinerary routes. The nature of the terrain, split by several ridges, means that the area has more variety than Hintertux. The new 8 seater Rotadl Lift shifts crowds very quickly and the 4 seater Daunjoch gives access to a new black run.

The high speed access gondolas ensure short, if any, queuing times - we skied at Easter and never waited for more than a few seconds to get on a lift. The only drawback is the lack of treeline skiing in bad weather, although there is good skiing at Schlick 2000, near Fulpmes, accessed by the very efficient bus service.

The Big Family Ski Club provides a great learning environment for children, with three covered magic carpet lifts.

Better skiers can try the 10km itinerary route down to the valley station or revel in deep powder, when there are heavy snowfalls.

The mountain restaurants are functional rather than fantastic but there are some excellent restaurants and hotels in Neustift and Fulpmes, lower down the valley. I recommend the Alpenresidenz Viktoria for a super family run hotel with excellent, imaginative food, and the Augarten for friendly and efficient service. The Bergjuwel is a comfortable base with good facilities. Their afternoon apres ski buffet is excellent.
